Finding Connection & Peace Through Trauma Sensitive Yoga: A Brain Approach event

PTSD UK and The Minded Institute are proud to bring you this online event to learn how yoga can support the transformation and relaxation of the nervous system – with an opportunity to learn some basic techniques.

The holidays can be a joyous time for many, but also they can be difficult. In this live interactive seminar, Heather Mason, an international leader in yoga therapy for PTSD, will discuss how yoga can forge a connection between body and mind, self and universe. She will share how yoga changed her life, while explaining through a review of research and theory, how yoga can support the transformation and relaxation of the nervous system. As the nervous system changes, the social engagement system is enhanced and we find it easier to connect to ourselves and others.

Towards the end of the seminar, participants will have an opportunity to learn and practice basic yoga techniques for grounding and connection.

No experience is required and adaptions for practice in a chair will be offered.

WHEN AND WHERE

This is an online event hosted by The Minded Institute and will be held via Zoom. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive an email with all the details you’ll need to log in to the event.

The event will run on 20th December 2022 starting at 7:30pm (GMT) and will run for 60 minutes.

TICKETS

This event will be run on a ‘Pay what you can’ basis as we want to make this as accessible as possible for everyone – so there are 3 ticket types:

  • Full Price Ticket: This ticket is £5
  • Pay What You Can Ticket: In this option, you can pay whatever amount you can afford to attend the event
  • Complimentary Ticket: This complimentary ticket entitles you to access to the event at no charge – please only use this option if you’d otherwise be unable to attend the event due to financial constraints.

50% of the proceeds of ticket prices will be donated to PTSD UK to help support our mission to support everyone affected by PTSD and C-PTSD, no matter the trauma that caused it.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a limited capacity for this event, and so attendance is capped at 95 places.

In signing up to this event, you need to understand and agree to the following important statement: ‘I understand that I am responsible for my own health and well-being during the entire session and that the facilitator, PTSD UK, and The Minded Institute are not responsible and are relinquished of responsibility for any mental or physical problems that arise out of attending the session. If I feel triggered it is my responsibility to take care of my own mental health and I understand that the facilitator will not be able to provide any individual support. If I need support, I am clear as to how to access it, and I feel able to do so. I understand it is my responsibility to safely set up my own space in which to undertake the session whether just listening or engaging in movement or breath-work. During any taught practices that I choose to engage in, it is my responsibility to follow the directions safely. If for any reason I feel these directions do not meet my needs, I will not engage in the practice.’

More about Heather Mason

Heather Mason, MA, Msc, RYT-500, is the founder of The Minded Institute, an internationally renowned yoga therapy training school, and also the Yoga in Health Care Alliance. She holds master’s degrees in Buddhist Studies, in Psychotherapy, Medical Physiology, and has extensive training in Neuroscience. Heather has been teaching yoga since 2001 and has specialized in the use of yoga therapy for mental health populations since 2007. She was the first person in the UK to train to teach trauma sensitive yoga from the Boston Trauma Centre in 2008 and later began offering yoga therapy at the Traumatic Stress Service at the Maudsley.. She has taught at the Boston University School of Medicine and various other academic institutions from Harvard to UCL. Heather is actively focused on the integration of yoga into the UK’s National Health Service and in 2018 helped to create an All Party Parliamentary Group, “Yoga in Society.” In the same year, Heather co-edited Yoga and Mental Health, a textbook for yoga and health professionals on yoga’s inclusion into mental healthcare and in 2021 she co-authored Yoga on Prescription.

Treatments for PTSD

It is possible for PTSD to be successfully treated many years after the traumatic event occurred, which means it is never too late to seek help. For some, the first step may be watchful waiting, then exploring therapeutic options such as individual or group therapy – but the main treatment options in the UK are psychological treatments such as Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming (EMDR) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Traumatic events can be very difficult to come to terms with, but confronting and understanding your feelings and seeking professional help is often the only way of effectively treating PTSD. You can find out more in the links below, or here.
