Kieran Tompsett PTSD UK Ambassador

Reality Star Kieran Tompsett has been unveiled as PTSD UK's newest celebrity ambassador

PTSD UK is delighted to announce that we have a new inspiring celebrity ambassador on board – Businessman Kieran Tompsett from the hit BBC One series The Traitors.

Kieran is delighted to be working with charity PTSD UK and to help our mission to support everyone affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, no matter the trauma that caused it.

Away from the TV screens, Kieran, a Father of two, from Hertfordshire has in recent years suffered extensively with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and mental health problems, after suffering a string of emotional events which included almost being killed in a knife attack; his seventeen-month-old baby nephew dying and losing his mother, who he described as his best friend.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition which some people develop after experiencing a trauma such as a road traffic incidentbereavement, personal assault, natural disaster, miscarriagetraumatic childbirthbeing bulliedsexual violencechildhood abusedomestic abuse or fire. It’s estimated that in any given week in the UK, 4 in 100 people have PTSD – this equates to 2,612,000 people in the UK, yet it’s still an incredibly misunderstood, and still relatively unknown condition.

In the past, Kieran has been in some of the darkest places of his life – even contemplating suicide.

After his knife attack, 14 years ago, Kieran suffered from panic attacks, nightmares and hallucinations, leading him to be diagnosed with PTSD. After speaking with his friends and family Kieran was able to see the light and find a way through and he is now hoping to use his new platform to educate and help people suffering and in pain just like he was.

As part of this aim to help others with similar experiences, Kieran offered his support to PTSD UK – and we are honoured to have him on board.

Jacqui Suttie, PTSD UK Founder and CEO said, “We’re delighted to welcome Kieran as an Ambassador for PTSD UK. His inspiring attitude particularly with regards to his PTSD journey, and his desire to help others is incredible, and we have no doubt that through supporting our work, Kieran will provide hope to so many people affected by PTSD and C-PTSD.

Having celebrities and well-known people like Kieran speak openly about their experience with PTSD not only raises awareness, but it helps to break down stigma, challenge attitudes and encourage others to talk up and reach out for help. We are incredibly honoured to have Kieran’s support.

Kieran said, “PTSD can affect absolutely everyone and I just want to be able to help those suffering in any way I can and to show people although not easy, there are ways to get your life back on track.”

Treatments for PTSD

It is possible for PTSD to be successfully treated many years after the traumatic event occurred, which means it is never too late to seek help. For some, the first step may be watchful waiting, then exploring therapeutic options such as individual or group therapy – but the main treatment options in the UK are psychological treatments such as Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming (EMDR) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Traumatic events can be very difficult to come to terms with, but confronting and understanding your feelings and seeking professional help is often the only way of effectively treating PTSD. You can find out more in the links below, or here.
