Hadrian's Wall Ultra Adventure

The route

DAY 1: The Action Challenge Camp at Hadrians Wall

We transfer to the Ultra Adventure Camp, close to the village of Humshaugh. Here you will find comfortable tents, a dining area and private toilets – luxury! Tonight we have a briefing then dinner.

DAY 2: Heddon on the Wall to Camp – 18 miles (29km)

Our challenge starts from Heddon on the Wall, trekking on and next to this 200 year old relic!  We pass 5km north of Corbridge & significant ruins of a preserved Roman garrison and museum of excavated artefacts, then Chesters cavalry fort, known to the Romans as Cilurnum. We walk back into camp, for a well earned dinner and refreshments!

DAY 3: Camp to Gilsland – 18.6 miles (30km)

We trek into a wild landscape with rolling hills, passing the site of the Roman Temple of Mithras, followed by Housteads Roman Fort at 12km. This is the most complete Roman fort in Britain and one of the best-known from the entire Roman Empire. This afternoon we walk past Aesica fort and then the 12th century Thirlwell Castle before ending the day at The Samson Inn (where a well-earned beverage awaits!).

DAY 4: Gilsland to Carlisle – 19.3 miles (31km)

Today we cross Willowford bridge – made of the same “weathering” steel as the Angel of the North. After 10km we have dropped 100m and can feel we are dropping to the coastal levels. Our first highlight of the day is the beautiful 13th-century Lanercost Priory, part of which survives as a church to its full height. From here the main signs of the walls will be the site of the Mile Turrets that we pass and the numerous buildings made from the stones from the Wall. We gradually leave the wide open spaces behind and as we approach our final stop in Carlisle. There will of course be celebrations as we cross the finish line and a glass of fizz – before we transfer back to camp for a slap-up dinner to toast our Ultra Adventure!

DAY 5: Return Home

After a final breakfast together its time to depart.
